Atlantic influence meets mountain terroir
Portugal's largest DOC with Atlantic influence, granite soils, and high rainfall (1,200mm+). Named for lush green landscape, not wine color. Nine distinct sub-regions producing everything from light, spritzy wines to serious, age-worthy Alvarinhos. The pergola training system (enforcado) traditional but declining.
The world's most dramatic wine landscape with steep terraced vineyards (socalcos) along the Douro River. Schist soils crack vertically allowing deep root penetration. Extreme continental climate with temperatures ranging from -5°C to 45°C. Home to Port and increasingly world-class table wines.
The world's most famous fortified wine with strict regulations. Fermentation stopped by addition of grape spirit (aguardente) at 77% alcohol. Over 80 permitted grape varieties but five main ones dominate. Aged in Vila Nova de Gaia lodges traditionally.
Mountain wines and sparkling traditions
Granite soils and Atlantic breezes
Protected by granite mountains (Serra da Estrela), creating a continental climate with Atlantic influence. Granite soils with pine and eucalyptus forests. Historic region renaissance after cooperative monopoly ended (1989). Now producing Portugal's most elegant wines.
Atlantic influence with clay-limestone soils (barros). Known for traditional method sparkling wines and tannic Baga-based reds that can age for decades. Climate change helping ripen traditionally austere Baga. Natural wine movement strong here.
Diverse terroirs from Atlantic coast to interior mountains
Sun-drenched plains and ancient traditions
Vast rolling plains (30% of Portugal) with hot, dry climate. Cork oak forests (montado) dominate landscape. Eight sub-regions with diverse soils from granite to schist to limestone. Home to ancient talha (amphora) winemaking tradition - UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Atlantic influence and fortified traditions
Volcanic terroir and immortal wines
Volcanic island 600km off Morocco coast. Steep terraces (poios) with irrigation channels (levadas). Unique fortified wines using heat treatment (estufagem for basic, canteiro for premium). Virtually indestructible wines that can age for centuries - bottles from 1700s still drinking beautifully.
Volcanic archipelago producing unique Atlantic wines
250+ native varieties - Europe's greatest ampelographic treasure
Portugal's most prestigious grape with small berries, low yields (max 1.5kg/vine), and intense concentration. Produces powerful, floral wines with violet notes, firm tannins, and extraordinary aging potential. The backbone of premium Port and increasingly important in table wines across all regions.
